About Us

Re-opened on Canberra Day 2011, Scope Mount Stromlo has operated successfully in the old Mount Stromlo Visitors Centre for the last 18 months, seeing over 80000 people return to the site.

The café was re-opened by Simone Hunter, who worked for Simon & Joasia Robinson of Red Belly Black prior to the 2003 bushfires.

A Weston Creek girl who has a passion for the region and its history, she took the project on, recognizing the need for the café to be opened again as a sign of recuperation within the Stromlo and local community and the area, post bushfires.

After witnessing the return of the local & tourist crowd to the site, Simone was inspired to participate in the Centenary Program next year, and will be kicking off celebrations on January 18 with an exhibition exploring the Past, Present and Future of the both the site, the region and the community who live and work within it.

Scope Mount Stromlo is by day, just a café and art space. By Night, it’s a function centre where you can come and enjoy the most spectacular view.

People visiting us come from far and wide to access the Observatory, enjoy the views, bushwalk, cycle and mountain bike ride, observe wildlife, observe the stars and stop in for a coffee and a chat.

Perhaps due to its location, the café has acted as a quasi-tourist hub over the past 18 months, with staff directing visitors to enjoy the delights of Mount Stromlo and providing information to tourists on the spaces around it and the history of the site.  The location is very much the gateway to the Cotter Region, and with views due west to the Brindabellas and a wonderful aspect north towards Yass, it is the best place in Canberra to watch the sun go down. As Mount Stromlo, Weston Creek & Beyond continue to rejueveinate, Scope Mount Stromlo looks forward to welcoming new & old customers, neighbours and friends back to the area in style.
